This page opens the typing test in its easiest setting: 10 common words, no punctuation and no numbers. There is no timer running out, so children can type at their own pace and still see their speed and accuracy at the end.
Ask for accuracy first and praise it more than speed. Ten minutes a day works better than one long session a week. Show the home row position (fingers on A S D F and J K L ;) before the first test, and let the child move up to 25 words only when 10 words feel easy. Read our full guide to teaching kids to type.
It varies a lot with age and practice. As a rough guide, many primary school children type 10 to 20 WPM, and with regular practice older children often pass 30 WPM. Steady progress matters more than the number.
