You finished a typing test and got a number. Now you want to know one thing: is it good? This page answers that for every common speed, from 20 to 120 words per minute (WPM), so you can look up your own result directly.
๐ The WPM chart
These levels are approximate, but they match what most typing platforms and employers use. All of them assume an accuracy of about 95% or more.
| Your speed | Level | Is it good? |
|---|---|---|
| 20 WPM | Beginner | Slow for a keyboard. Typical of hunt-and-peck typing. |
| 30 WPM | Below average to average | Fine for messages and schoolwork, slow for office work. |
| 40 WPM | Average | Yes, it is a normal adult speed. Enough for many jobs. |
| 50 WPM | Good | Yes. Above average and comfortable for office work. |
| 60 WPM | Very good | Yes. Faster than most people. |
| 70 WPM | Excellent | Yes. Enough for almost any typing job. |
| 80 WPM | Excellent | Fast. Professional level. |
| 90 WPM | Elite | Very fast. Only a small share of people type this quickly. |
| 100 WPM | Elite | Exceptional. Roughly double the average. |
| 120 WPM | Elite | Competitive typist territory. |
๐ Your number, explained
Is 30 WPM a good typing speed?
It is a common speed for people who never learned touch typing. It works for everyday use, but most office jobs expect more. With a few weeks of regular practice, 30 WPM usually turns into 40.
Is 40 WPM good?
Yes, 40 WPM is about average for adults. Many entry-level office and data entry roles list 40 WPM as their minimum.
Is 50 WPM good? What about 49 or 56?
Anything from the high 40s to the high 50s is a good speed. You are above average and will not be held back by typing in a normal office job. The difference between 49 and 56 WPM is small in practice, so look at your accuracy before chasing a few extra words.
Is 60 WPM good?
Yes. 60 WPM is faster than most people and is the figure many employers treat as "fast typist". With 95% accuracy or better it is a solid professional speed.
Is 70 or 80 WPM fast?
Yes. At 70 to 80 WPM you type about as fast as many people think in full sentences. This is the usual range for transcription work and for experienced touch typists.
Is 100 WPM good?
100 WPM is excellent. Very few people reach it, and no ordinary job requires it. If you are here, more speed will not change much in daily work. Accuracy and comfort matter more.
๐ก Check the accuracy too: 60 WPM with 98% accuracy is a better result than 70 WPM with 88%. Every mistake costs time to notice and fix, so a fast but messy score is slower in real work than it looks.
๐ฑ On a phone the numbers are different
Phone typing is slower than keyboard typing for most people, so do not compare the two. A large study of phone typing reported an average of roughly 36 WPM. On a phone, 40 WPM is already a good speed.
๐ How to reach the next level
- Under 40 WPM: learn the home row and stop looking at the keyboard. See home row keys explained and how to type without looking.
- 40 to 60 WPM: practice a little every day and fix your weakest keys. Try these 10 typing exercises.
- Over 60 WPM: work on accuracy, punctuation and numbers. Read how to improve typing accuracy.
โ Conclusion
Around 40 WPM is average, 50 to 60 is good, and 70 or more is fast. Whatever your number is, it only means something if it is repeatable, so take the 1-minute typing test three times and use the average.
